Back to School: How to Prepare for Math

Back to School: How to Prepare for Math

Going back to math after two months off can feel overwhelming. Especially if you meant to stay sharp over summer break, but instead…didn’t. You may have even told yourself you’d practice a little every week, and now it's suddenly August and you can’t remember what a linear equation even looks like.

We get it. The learning curve is real. But there are ways to make the return to math class a little easier.

Where to Start

Math is tough enough on its own. But how you study can make a big difference. Try these simple steps to get back on track.

  1. Cut the distractions

Put your phone away. Yes, it is obvious advice, but it works. Choose a quiet space. No screens, no TikTok in the background. If music helps you focus, keep it low and lyric-free.

  1. Make a list of what to review

Write down the key topics or concepts you learned last year. Think: equations, fractions, work problems, geometry— whatever applies to your grade level. Not sure where to start? Tools like StarSpark.AI can help generate practice questions from your grade in seconds.

  1. Spot the weak areas

Look at your list and check off what you easily remember. The rest? That’s where to focus. Refreshing what you already know builds confidence, but your time is best spent on what feels fuzzy or unfamiliar

  1. Practice, not just watch

Watching YouTube videos may feel productive, but it’s not the same as doing the work. Dig up old textbooks, search old worksheets, or ask an AI tool like StarSpark to walk you through interactive examples.

        5. Don’t get discouraged

You’re not supposed to remember everything. If something doesn’t click for you right away, Ask a friend, search for similar problems or type your exact question into a math tutoring platform. Getting stuck and working through it is part of getting better.

Keep It in Perspective

This is a review, not a full-on study boot camp. Don’t overthink it, or overdo it. Overloading yourself in one weekend won’t help and might end up backfiring. Most teachers spend the first week revisiting old material, so don’t stress about mastering it all right now.

The night before school starts, skip the late-night review session. Make sure your backpack’s ready and you get a good night’s sleep. Being well-rested helps more than cramming ever will.

Quick Recap

  • Remove distractions
  • Make a topic list
  • Focus on areas that need review
  • Practice with real problems
  • Be patient with yourself
