The Destination vs. the Journey: Comparing Education Standards to Curriculum
Have you ever planned a road trip? You know where you want to end up, but there are multiple ways to get there. When it comes to education, terms like standards and curriculum often get used interchangeably—but they are not the same thing. One simple way to think about them is through a similar travel metaphor: standards are the destination, and curriculum is the journey taken to get there.
Standards: The Destination
Imagine you are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon. The destination is clear—you know where you’ll arrive.
sThat is what standards like the Common Core State Standards or other state-specific standards do for education. They outline what students should know and be able to do by the end of a grade level or course. Think of the Common Core State Standards for math and literacy, or state-specific standards for science and social studies, like a map pin dropped on the horizon. The standards don’t tell you how to get to that end goal, but they give educators a shared goal to aim for as they plan instruction to ensure student growth and learning.
Curriculum: The Journey
Now think about the actual trip—the roads you take, the sights you see along the way, the stops you choose to make. That is the curriculum.
The curriculum is the collection of resources, lessons, activities, and materials teachers use to guide students toward meeting the standards. Different schools or districts may choose different curriculum to support students on their learning journeys based on their values and the needs of their students within the community they are serving.
Curriculum:
- Outlines the path to reach the standards
- Includes lesson plans, activities, and resources
- Can be tailored to student interests and community context
Why the Distinction Matters
Here’s a quick breakdown between AI and traditional tutoring:
Confusion often arises when people expect standards to provide the “how.” Standards don’t dictate the teaching methods, the pacing, or even the specific materials; they simply state what students need to achieve.
Curriculum, on the other hand, is where teachers and schools have room to make choices. It’s where they can respond to students’ interests, leverage local resources, or use creative approaches to make learning meaningful.
Ultimately, standards keep everyone moving toward a shared destination, and curriculum makes the journey engaging, efficient, and relevant. Without standards, the trip can lose direction. Without a thoughtful curriculum, the trip can feel disjointed or uninspired.
Both are essential:
- Without standards, learning can lose direction.
- Without a strong curriculum, learning can feel disjointed and uninspired.
An Important Reminder
One important thing to keep in mind is that a curriculum resource may not always go into the depth required to fully meet the requirements of a standard.
The standards are often long, detailed, and open to interpretation, so curriculum materials don’t always line up perfectly.
There also may be a mismatch in the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) required by a standard when compared to the learning activities offered in a curriculum resource. Simply mentioning a concept related to a standard doesn't guarantee true alignment to the standard.
In essence, while curriculum resources serve as valuable tools, achieving full alignment with the depth of a standard requires careful understanding of the standards themselves, which includes considering the rigor and Depth of Knowledge required for mastery, to ensure there are no gaps in learning that may impact future success.
